The ISAs for the new specifications (science) are very different to that of the old old specification.

A summary of the new ISAs.
There are several stages in the process of administering an ISA.
Stage 1: Planning ( limited control)
Stage 2: Reporting on the planning research (High control)
Stage 3: Practical work (limited control)
Stage 4: Processing primary data (high control)
Stage 5: Analysing results (high control)

It is worth reading AQAs booklet 'Controlled Assessment in GCSE' I have put a copy of this on the Haringey MLE (accessible only by Haringey teachers)

Some key things to bear in mind about the new ISAs:

The marking of the ISAs follows the 'best -fit' approach. Teachers are required to mark holistically and arrive at a 'best -fit' mark. This is approach to marking is familiar to the way in which English coursework is mark.
The literacy demands are higher in the new specifications. Section 1 of the ISA involves assessing the quality of written communication. The question examining this aspect is known as the QWC and in some ways is an amplification of the old SPG (spelling grammar and punctuation). This is a 9 mark question and requires pupils to show good understanding of the science as well as the ability to do extended writing. At a recent standardisation meeting the examiner was at pains to explain that teachers will need to teach pupils how to maximise their marks in this type of question. A higher level answer (7,8,9 marks) is characterised as follows:

knowledge of accurate information appropriately contextualised
Detailed understanding, supported by relevant evidence and examples
Answer is coherent and in an organised , logical sequence, containing a wide range of appropriate or relevant specialist terms used accurately
The answer shows almost faultless, punctuation and grammar

To support departments in this I have put together a two session CPD that will enable teachers to address the administration ,marking the ISAs and a systematic way of teaching pupils the literacy skills required for the QWC.

This year marks 200 years since transatlantic slavery was abolished. It seems to be a quite programme. I suspect that this year's Black History month is going to feature Slavery quite heavily.

For my part i will be preparing material that features the science and history behind the production of sugar, iron and cotton.

Akingwah was the mother of Mathew Henson's only child. There is now a whole clan of Inuit who proudly celebrate their famous explorer ancestor.

There is a website that the clan maintain showing all the present day Hensons.

I have written about Lewis Hamilton in my previous blog and I am reapeating this because I think it is an itwem worth developing because his story does break the mould of what is possible for young people from relatively disadavantage backgrounds ( I am not suggesting he is from a disadvantaged background). What is certainly true is the fact that He with massive fatherly support has managed to break into the most expensive sport ansd reach the pinnacle. To give an idea of the cost involved. Each time A formula 1 car does a test lap it cost £3000.considering they do many laps. The formula 1 team McLaren has 1000 people whose sole purpose is to make sure that two cars on the grid are at the peak of performance. It cost £200milion to run a F1 team that is the sort of background this boy of African Caribbean heritage has broke into and seems set to dominate and possibly re-define.

Next tuesday ( the long awaited science summer school takes starts at the metropolitan university SuperLab. The popular project is the DNA profiling, I wonder why? Could it be the inflence of programmes such as CSI. I am certainly looking forward to learning about this topic. The next popular topic is the Rocket.
I am hoping that pupils will record their reflections on this blog.That might be a useful way of getting their thoughts.
